Amateur Photography – Techniques For Improving Your Photograhic Skills

By Photography Editor

As this article explains, there are certain techniques that amateur photographers can use to produce better-looking photographs and improve their photographic skills ...

Even amateur photography can employ certain techniques to come up with better-looking photographs. For instance, amateur photography can begin by using black and white film since the effects are often visually arresting. Most digital cameras have a black and white mode or you also have the option of converting a color photograph to monochrome using digital imaging software.

The best subjects for black and white amateur photography are portraits since they can convey emotion, landscapes since they are relatively easy to capture and textures since they can be found almost anywhere. When taking black and white photographs, you have to be aware of the different gradations of gray that will be highlighted in these shots.

Amateur Photography - Basic Tips

Even if you are the official family photographer, amateur photography need not be lacking in artistic sense and visual style. When taking family portraits, you need to get everyone comfortable and relaxed so that they do not look stiff in the photographs. Photos taken at eye level or below will always look warm and inviting. Do not hesitate to focus on faces instead of backgrounds in family photos, unless you are on vacation and want the view behind you to be captured.

For outdoor amateur photography, it is best to schedule a shoot during the early morning or early evening. During midday, when the sun is at its brightest, photos tend to look harsh and washed out. While it is relatively easy to take photos of landscapes, you can also look for interesting patterns on plants and puddles of water outdoors that could make excellent pictures as well.

Amateur photography for pets can also be a fun exercise, especially when you take photos of your dog or cat during its favorite activity. Since pets are constantly moving, you may want to increase your shutter speed to capture the action. If you want a still shot, a close-up will always work best. The Portrait Mode in most digital cameras is ideal for making the subject focused and the background slightly blurry, an excellent function whether for people or for your pets.
