In 2001 the people at Nintendo felt that they were facing a crossroads in the video game console business. With the calm and collected attitude that has made Nintendo a leader in video game technology for decades the engineers and executives at Nintendo took a long look at the video game console market and came to the decision that there was too much emphasis on power and storage capacity. As more new consoles by video game console makers reached for more and more power the interaction between the gamer and the game was being lost. Powerful systems were creating increasingly complicated game controls that were becoming extremely difficult to follow and remember.
While there seemed to be a huge surge in video game popularity in the mid-1990’s, Nintendo noticed that many of the users that grew up on the simpler systems of the 1980’s were losing interest. For many video game players the enjoyment comes not necessarily from how detailed the graphics and audio for a game is but in how well the game interacts with the player. Role playing games were becoming movies where the player was only allowed a certain range of activities and any kind of imagination was being taken away from the whole process. Nintendo saw a problem and Nintendo felt that within the resolution of that problem was a market waiting to be tapped…again.
Nintendo began development of the Nintendo Wii around 2001 and from the very beginning the idea behind the Nintendo Wii was to bring video games back to the people and let the player and the game interact as much as possible. For years the Nintendo Wii was under development but it was not initially called the Nintendo Wii. While under development it was given a more appropriate name for the time, it was called the Revolution. Nintendo felt they were spearheading a revolution in the video game industry and, as time would tell, they were not only right in their assessment of the state of the video game industry but they were right in their assessment of the potential success of the solution.
And Then Came The Wii
In September of 2006 the Nintendo Wii was launched all over the world to a huge level of hype and anticipation. Small fortunes were made by the earliest buyers who were smart enough to put their Nintendo Wii on
and let the people that really wanted one drive the price up. The anticipation and hype were right on as the Nintendo Wii and its new and innovative interactive video game model struck a chord with a lot of people and the very audience Nintendo expected to capture fell right into line and fell in love with the Nintendo Wii.
Hardcore role playing gamers dismissed the system as a toy but those were not the people the Nintendo Wii was designed to delight. Video gamers that became disillusioned with complicated games and over the top game play could now play tennis or bowl on their Nintendo Wii by simply moving their arms and suddenly the world was interested in video games again.
