The United States acquired nearly 600,000 consoles to follow the immediate release of the Nintendo Wii into retail stores. The revenue since its initial release has hit nearly $190 million in the preceding months. Even though the Wii launch went smoother than that of Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, there were problems that arose. Due to the scarcity of the controller that was to accompany the Nintendo Wii, price gouging from venders became a massive problem to the consumer with prices becoming outrageous. This trend is still evident even today with prices ranging from $660 dollars for the purchase of the system with 3 games. Will this trend ever dissipate?

The US is not the only country to feel the effects of the Nintendo Wii. Singapore sold 2,000 consoles in the first two days of retail. Australia reported that the Wii console had become the fastest selling console throughout its history of gaming console inventory. Japan estimated that 370,000 consoles sold in two days, with Wii Sports and Wii play generating the top selling games to accompany the console. The United Kingdom sold 105,000 consoles in its opening weekend and used celebrities such as Pat Cash and Ian Wright to promote the Nintendo Wii sales. China has postponed the release of the Nintendo Wii until early 2008 due to the high demand for the console throughout the country. This trend also occurred in South Korea and Spain.

Does The Nintendo Wii Live Up To Its Hype?

The Nintendo wii sales has proven that the Nintendo Wii has outsold all of its predecessors and is said to have outsold all of its competition as stated by Financial Times and The Wall Street Journal. In the United States, some of the reports claim that the Nintendo Wii has outsold its competition by a factor of 2-1 in the United States and by 4-1 in Japan. The world-wide margin of purchase now stands at 3-1 with Wii outselling the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Seems like the Nintendo Wii is really living up to the hype that this is becoming the console to reckon with.
